Anoop Desai(American Idol Top 13)
American Idol 2009 has been a season of surprises as well as strong contenders. Not only was there the wildcard vote, but along with it a surprise fourth candidate, Anoop Desai. While there must be the inevitable whittling down of contestants, the field is strong. Anoop Desai enchanted judges who threw him a lifeline; he may yet be the next American Idol. His opportunity has just begun.
Anoop Desai: American Idol? Yes, indeed. He won judges over with his audience pleasing, enthusiastic rendition of Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative.” Simon Cowell summed up the judges’ assessment.
“Very strange night,” says Simon; you’re like an enthusiastic dog, not the best singer but people like you, which is important. “We’ve got to cast this next stage, not just put the boring singers through, but the personalities as well.”
The full list of Top 13 includes the wild card winners, Jasmine Murray, Megan Joy Corkrey, Matt Giraud and the unusual Anoop Desai American Idol extra finalist, who join the previously selected finalists, Kris Allen, Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace,
Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert, Scott MacIntyre, Jorge Nuñez, Lil Rounds and Michael Sarver
As a biography, Anoop Desai is 21 years old and lives in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He is a graduate student at the University of North Carolina (UNC).
In his Kansas City audition, his sparkling, outgoing personality was much in evidence as he told judges they could call him “Anoop Dog.”
He wowed the judges with his soulful rendition of the Boyz II Men signature hit “Thank You” and unanimous votes set him to Hollywood where he continued to impress, this time, with Stevie Wonder’s “If It’s Magic.”
Already gathering a fan base, Anoop Desai has two Facebook Pages, an American Idol theme group page and a UNC fan club.
His triumphant night, March 5, 2009 fell on the one year anniversary of the shooting death of Eve Carson, the University of North Carolina’s student body president. He paid tribute to her in an interview, crediting her with giving him the impetus to compete on American Idol. While still living, he said she was an inspiring person committed to making the world a better place.
